Why Consult an Independent Counselor?

As someone who has been advising families for over 30 years, I know the sense of concern and lack of control parents feel as they begin the college selection process. It is indeed a bewildering time. Much is at stake.

Our sons and daughters face a difficult decision. As parents we want to help, but often legitimately do not have the time to develop the necessary expertise. We pay high taxes for good schools and often steep independent school fees as well, but feel less than confident in the attention we receive in return.

We also know that there can be an advantage in having a third party facilitate family communications, especially when tensions rise under the pressure of schedules and deadlines.

The personalized college advisory service I offer is not so much a placement as a counseling service. It begins with a detailed review of past academic and extracurricular achievements and an honest discussion of future goals. I then work with you and your son or daughter to select a list of colleges, based not only on factual data such as course offerings but also on less tangible assessments, drawn from over 30 years of experience and from staying in active contact with admission directors, teachers and students at close to 200 colleges.

Your son or daughter must decide for himself or herself where to spend the next four years. My aim is to work with you to assure the intelligence and self-awareness of that choice, and then to help your son or daughter in practical ways to make the best possible application - with special attention paid to the application essays.
